Habs: The Price is finally right !
Posted on 4 Sep 2010 by Chris Galanopoulos.
Over the past couple of week's Habs fans (including myself) became nervous as training camps in the NHL are about to begin and the Canadiens had not inked their starting goaltender to a contract for the upcoming season. The reason that I was nervous was not because I thought that the Canadiens would be starting the season with Alex Auld in goal but mostly for the fan reaction if he wasn't s...

Pierre Gauthier’s Summer Diary
Posted on 8 Aug 2010 by Corey Krakower.
Being an NHL General Manager is a 12 month a year job that never stops. It is one of the most difficult jobs in sports, unless of course you're making a trade with Darryl Sutter. Fortunately, GMs get a bit of a break from the spotlight during the summer, but it makes you wonder what these guys are doing from late April until August. Thankfully, Montreal Canadiens General Manager Pierre Gauthier...

The Major Issues in the Carey Price Negotiations
Posted on 27 Jul 2010 by Corey Krakower.
The biggest question in Montreal right now is – what’s going on with Carey Price. The team traded playoff hero Jaroslav Halak in fear of what he would ask for salary-wise, which in itself would have suggested that the Canadiens and Carey Price were on the same page with respect to a new contract. What most people don’t understand is that when negotiating a new contract, it’s not just ab...

Habs, Lapierre come to terms on a new contract
Posted on 13 Jul 2010 by Corey Krakower.
RDS reported this morning that the Montreal Canadiens and Maxim Lapierre have agreed to terms on a 1 year contract extension. Lapierre will earn $900,000 in 2010-11, a modest raise from his $800,000 salary last season. I for one am that his salary went up, rather than "take a dive"! The 25-year old center/right wing had a poor regular season in 2009, but he redeemed himself with some solid play...

Questionable Auld-ition; a Moore affordable center & a trade proposal
Posted on 2 Jul 2010 by Corey Krakower.
Montreal has been very quiet during the first two days of free agency. They signed a backup goalie in Alex Auld and a bottom 6 center/left wing in Dustin Boyd. The lack of activity can be explained by having very little cap room, but a few eyebrows were still raised by these 2 signings. First, Montreal addressed their need for a backup goalie by signing Alex Auld, a 29-year-old veteran backu...

Sergei’s gone, just carry on, don’t mourn, rejoice!
Posted on 29 Jun 2010 by Corey Krakower.
News broke in Montreal this afternoon that Sergei Kostitsyn was traded to the Nashville Predators for, well, no one cares. Never in my history of being an avid Canadiens supporter have I seen such unanimous consent among fans to get rid of a player. The younger brother of Andrei Kostitsyn overstayed his welcome, and he essentially wrote his own ticket of town recently when he decided to rip int...

Montreal Canadiens Draft Preview
Posted on 23 Jun 2010 by Corey Krakower.
The ProSportsBlogging team is down in LA for the 2010 NHL draft, and amidst the speculation of Taylor vs Tyler and the abundance of trade rumors, the Montreal Canadiens hold the 27th overall pick in the first round. The 2010 draft class is a deep group with many high end forwards, and a number of quality defensemen; so Montreal should end up with a good player, provided they don’t overestimat...

Habs Sign Tomas Plekanec to 6 Year Deal
Posted on 23 Jun 2010 by Corey Krakower.
Montreal Canadiens’ fans received some good news yesterday. They re-signed one of their key players; one that was sure to attract a lot of interest in the UFA market. No, I’m not talking about Mathieu Darche’s 1 year extension, I am talking about Tomas Plekanec’s new 6 year deal that will pay him $5 million per season. On the surface, that seems like a lot of money for a “1A” center...

It’s Time for Montreal to Trade Markov
Posted on 22 Jun 2010 by Corey Krakower.
Andrei Markov has been Montreal’s best defenseman for the longest time. He’s a very good skater, he’s a force on the powerplay, he is an elite puck mover and he can defend just as well as he can produce offense. It’s rare that a defenseman in the NHL can be an impact player in all 3 zones. Most D are slotted as either offensive players that join the rush and play big minutes on the PP, ...

Breaking news – Habs trade Halak to St. Louis Blues (updated with analysis)
Posted on 17 Jun 2010 by Corey Krakower.
It's now confirmed by various media outlets that the Montreal Canadiens have traded goaltender Jaroslav Halak to the St. Louis Blues for Lars Eller and Ian Schultz. Both Eller and Schultz are prospects in the Blues organization. Lars Eller is actually a very good player, he was a 1st round pick in 2007 and will be in Montreal's top 6 next year at C or on LW. Eller is more of a playmaker than...
